Hi Guys,

First off, what a great project. I'm very impressed with the amount of thought you've put into this package. I was playing with some of the others out there and longing for a number of features, then I found Livesectional. You have already thought of and coded everything, along with a support forum!

I'm working on a personal project that will have between 400 and 500 pixels and everything is working great so far. I have two questions/tweaks that I'd like to play with.

1) Is it possible to change the delay between sequences of blinks. It appears to wait for 2 seconds. I'd like to play with extending this timer. I didn't see it in the script that holds the variables and I can certainly dig for it in the code, just curious if you can give a pointer to it or possibly work that into a variable in a future release?

2) For the legend, I'd like to play with what it would look like without a 'base color'. I'm not in front of it currently, but for example, instead of having it Red and then flashing for rain or lightning, just leave it off and just blink the indicated colors for the rain.

Thoughts on these?

Thanks again!
Vance

Hi all, I am running into the following string of errors when booting using the 3.1 image on a pizero. I am not certain the lights are hooked up the right way yet (I am having trouble figuring out the direction of the data and which cable is which (the documentation on the Amazon page for these lights is awful (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AU6UG70/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

After this series of errors, the system appears to boot up normally. I am able to go to the web interface just fine (indicating that there's no network issues). Performing any changes to the lights doesn't actually take effect on the lights themselves, possibly because I might have them wired wrong. I am unsure if this error is because my wiring could be off.

Thanks in advance!

I noticed two small bugs regarding dimming of all lights except for the home airport (if this feature is used). One is in the Configuration Editor, where the setting description shows the range as 0-255. In reality, this setting goes from 0-100, where 0 isn't dimmed at all, 30 would be dimmed 30% compared to the home airport, and 100 would be 100% dimmed (totally dark).

The other small error is in metar-v31.py. Under the section on dimming (def dim(data,value)), the line that dims the blue value needs a slight change to this:

blu = data - ((value * data)/100)

It was multiplying by data instead of data. Only showed up when certain colors were being displayed, and then the dimming wouldn't work correctly.

Such a cool program, and documented nicely enough that amateurs can figure it out.

Thanks!

I'm just starting into the world of RPi because I'm building a Live Sectional Map. I completed my physical setup bare bones with just a WS2811 string and RPi Zero WS. So far so good but I'm stuck. Running headless, with RPi having its own keyboard and mouse as well, when I start the map from the remote via the web configure page I the RPi sequences thru commands and then seems to get stuck in a loop. I'm not sure how to correct this. My next move is to remove the SD card and reformat it and load the system software again. I figure a prudent step.

1) RPi connects to the web ok and all local and remote commands seem to work fine including remote ssh via Putty.

2) The WS2811 goes through a rainbow startup as set in the Config page.

3) I can walk through the led's turning on and off up to #25. After that the Config ignores higher values and reverts to 25 leds.

4) I set the number of airports to 25 or set to something like 3 for testing I get the same results.

5) In all cases after the Rainbow startup the first 25 LEDs light.

6) The RPi shows on the local screen that it cycles through a the airports 5 times and then repeats quickly again and again until I Shutdown via web Config. I expect it is polling the FAA database via the web continuously. I have never let this continue more than a couple minutes.

A screenshot

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3i5hw2e008rfhbo/2020-04-16%2017.11.32-1.jpg?dl=0

Has anyone seem this?

Do you have suggestions as to how to proceed?

This is a really cool project and I want to thank you for generating the code and docs.

I haven't done any electronics work for a few years and this has been a rewarding effort. I've even broke out my soldering and test gear from 35 years ago. I grew up with DOS so perhaps Linux will come easy(ish).

Directory Structure

Below is the directory structure of the files used in LiveSectional v3.1. This project has been created so that the builder would have very little command line work. Most everything done except the initial setup is conducted through a web browser on the same network as the Raspberry Pi (RPI). But for those interested in the directory structure;

/NeoSectional

config.py - file that holds all the user defined settings.

startup.py - this file is called by the rc.local at startup and depending on settings in config.py will thread both metar-v31.py and metar-display-v31.py

metar-v31.py - main program that runs the addressable LED's

metar-display-v31.py - secondary program that runs an LCD or OLED displays if installed

airports - database of airports used by the LED's on the map

shutoff.py - used when rebooted or shutdown to turn off all the LED's and any display (LCD or OLEDS) if used.

webapp.py - Flask app used to run and support the airport and configuration editors.

/templates

apedit.html - Flask Template for editing the airports file.

confedit.html - Flask Template for editing the configuration file.

rc.local - run at startup

This information is detailed elsewhere but for a quick review its included here. Download the SD card image from www.livesectional.com. Burn image to the sd card using balenaEtcher, https://www.balena.io/etcher/. Install card into the Raspberry Pi (RPI).

Startup RPI for its first boot. A message will come up with instructions. These instructions explain to the user to run raspi-config to setup the wifi network name and password and to expand the file system to utilize the entire storage of the SD card that is being used. When it asks if you would like to Reboot Now, select Yes.

To verify that the wireless connection is setup properly, after reboot enter;

     pi@LiveSectionalV31:~ $ ping www.google.com

You should see results similar to;
PING www.google.com (216.58.193.196) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=44.5 ms
64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=45.10 ms
64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=3 ttl=55 time=45.6 ms
64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=4 ttl=55 time=44.5 ms

Hit Cntrl-z to quit.

If you see this, then the wireless connection is working properly.

Now its time to get the RPI's IP address. For more information on doing this via command line visit this page.

When RPI boots up after Wifi setup, webapp.py will display the IP Address that is running and give you the URL to enter into a web browser to configure your map. For instance it will report;

**********************************************
My IP Address is 192.169.84.23
**********************************************
Configure your LiveSectional by opening a
browser to http://192.169.84.23:5000/confedit
**********************************************

Write down the IP address and URL for later use.

Configuration

At this point the user can open any web browser that is connected to the same network as the RPI and enter 'IP Address:5000/confedit'. Be sure to replace the 'IP Address' with the IP Address you just wrote down from the previous step.

This utility will help to set up the way the map behaves. Read the explanation for each setting and try different configurations until it works as desired.

Edit Airports

Once the configuration setting have been saved, click on the 'Edit Airports' button (or enter 'IP Address:5000/apfedit' into the browser). This will bring up a second utility that will allow the user to create the 'airports' file and save it.

Display Hardware

The LiveSectional v3.1 has been written to accommodate either a single 16x2 LCD or SSD1306 128x64 I2C OLED display, or multiple OLED displays if desired. If more than 1 OLED is to be used, a TCA9548A Multiplexer must be installed as well. Below are links to each type of display and multiplexer.

Multiplexer (needed if using more than one OLED) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V2FN3V3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

OLED's provide a very nice and readable display. LCD modules are tried and true technology. Each have their advantages and disadvantages. I prefer the OLED displays.

If using an LCD, the script will scroll the airport's identifier and wind speed and direction. It can be configured to scroll a set number of airports regardless of the wind speed or just the airports whose wind speed are above a set speed. It will also show an arrow designating the direction from which the wind is blowing from 8 cardinal coordinates of the compass.

Using a single OLED display will simply rotate through the airports and their winds. An arrow will be shown with the general direction from which the wind is blowing.

If multiple OLED's are going to be used, a Multiplexer must be used as well. Simply speaking, each OLED has an address used to send information. However every OLED uses the same address. So a multiplexer is used to determine which OLED to send the desired information. A Multiplexer allows the use of up to 8 OLED displays. In the settings the number of displays will need to be properly set.

With multiple OLED's the information will populate each OLED and then scroll across the screens.

It is strongly suggested that if more than 1 OLED is to be used, start by wiring a single OLED and verify proper operation then add the multiplexer and extra OLED's to the project.
